The Opportunity
Our client, a leading public sector regulatory organisation, is seeking an Economist to join its Economic Regulation team. This is an excellent opportunity for an economist looking to develop specialist expertise in economic regulation, infrastructure economics, policy development, forecasting, and stakeholder engagement within a highly regulated environment.
Working as part of a specialist team, the successful candidate will contribute to the regulation and oversight of critical national infrastructure, supporting evidence-based decision-making through economic analysis, modelling, and policy evaluation.
The role offers exposure to senior stakeholders, complex economic issues, and opportunities to contribute to national and international regulatory initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct economic, quantitative and policy analysis to support regulatory decision-making.
- Develop and maintain financial, forecasting and analytical models.
- Analyse costs, revenues, operational performance and capacity metrics.
- Prepare consultation papers, decision documents, reports and presentations.
- Monitor the performance of regulated entities against established targets and frameworks.
- Engage with industry stakeholders, assessing and balancing differing viewpoints.
- Contribute to policy development and implementation at both national and international levels.
- Support wider organisational projects through data analysis, research and economic expertise.
- Keep abreast of developments in economic regulation and best practice.
Requirements
Essential
- Postgraduate qualification in Economics or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant professional experience.
- Strong quantitative, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Experience undertaking applied economic or policy analysis.
- Excellent report writing and communication skills.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively.
- Advanced Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel and the wider Microsoft 365 suite.
Desirable
- Experience working in an economic, regulatory, policy or consultancy environment.
- Advanced spreadsheet and financial modelling skills.
- Experience with statistical or econometric software packages (e.g. Stata or similar).
- Knowledge of regulatory economics, applied microeconomics or industrial organisation.
- Strong presentation and stakeholder management skills.
- Background or experience in areas such as infrastructure, transport, aviation, finance, accounting, law or related sectors.
